Empowering Communities to Address Malnutrition in Kebbi State

Malnutrition remains a major health challenge in Northwestern Nigeria, particularly among children under five and pregnant or lactating women. In response to this need, The Bakhita Initiative JDPC Sokoto and Catholic Relief Services organized a 5-day Step-Down Training for Community Nutrition Mobilizers (CNMs) under the SPHERE Project’s Nutrition Sector in Kebbi State, with support from Latter-day Saint Charities.

The training marks an important step toward strengthening community-based nutrition interventions across the state. Through practical and interactive sessions, CNMs were equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to support the implementation of Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) and Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition (MIYCN) within their communities.

Participants engaged in hands-on learning activities, including the preparation of Tom Brown, demonstrations on appropriate infant and young child feeding practices, and strategies for effective community engagement. The training also highlighted the 4-Star Meal Concept, promoting dietary diversity and improved household nutrition.

By the end of the training, Community Nutrition Mobilizers gained the confidence and practical tools required to deliver culturally appropriate nutrition education while strengthening monitoring and reporting at the community level.

Through this collaboration, The Bakhita Initiative JDPC Sokoto and CRS continue to lead efforts in empowering communities with sustainable solutions to reduce malnutrition and improve the health and wellbeing of children and families across Kebbi State.
