THE BAKHITA INITIATIVE (JDPC SOKOTO) SENSITIZED FARMERS ON THE ALTERNATIVE USE OF URINE AS FERTILIZER

On the 1st June – 13th August 2021, The Bakhita Initiative, with support from the Catholic Caritas Foundation of Nigeria, launched a project to promote urine as fertilizer among farmers in the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto. The project covered four states and was implemented in stages, starting with a PowerPoint presentation and online training for deanery coordinators and farmers.

The online training lasted two hours, allowing participants to ask questions and clarify doubts. Coordinators and farmers were tasked with disseminating the information to other farmers within two weeks. This led to the organization of farmers’ training in Sokoto and Kebbi deaneries, where early adopters showed interest and implemented the project.

The project aimed to promote sustainable farming practices and reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers. While some early adopters faced challenges due to irregular rainfall, affecting crop productivity, others testified to the positivity of alternative fertilizer.

Despite the challenges, the project successfully sensitized farmers across the diocese, promoting a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to farming. The initiative demonstrates the potential for innovative solutions to address environmental and agricultural challenges in the region.
