Bridging the Gap: Empowering the Girl-Child Through Mentorship and Education

According to enrollment statistics in 2022, Sokoto State had approximately 38% girl enrollment in primary schools, and Katsina State recorded approximately 45%. These figures are significantly lower than the national average of approximately 61%, showing the need for focused efforts to improve girl-child education.

To address this, the Girl-Child Mentorship and Educational Enrollment Project, funded by Sternsinger and implemented by The Bakhita Initiative JDPC Sokoto, is working to increase girl enrollment and retention in Sokoto and Katsina States. As part of the project, a one-day seminar was held on April 28th, 2025, at St. Vincent College, Malumfashi, Katsina State, under the theme:
“Promoting Girl-Child Mentorship and Educational Enrollment.”

Members of the PTA and SBMC from St. Theresa School, Funtua, and St. Vincent College, Ferere, Katsina State, gathered to discuss strategies to improve school enrollment and retention for girls through mentorship, community involvement, and advocacy for inclusive education.

The seminar inspired participants, who left with a renewed commitment to fostering a more supportive and inclusive educational environment for girls.
